NCS English Department:
Generative AI: In accordance with the NCS core values of excellence, service, courage, and conscience, this course assumes that all work submitted by a student will be generated by the student or as part of an assigned group. Any portion of an assignment not created by the student, including AI-generated content, will be treated as a violation of the NCS Honor Code All the writing assignments in this course are designed to train students to write clearly, critically, and creatively about abstract ideas; to interpret text carefully within given contexts; and to build well-substantiated arguments. In short, the writing assignments in this course prepare students to be better than AI. As AI becomes more prevalent, people will need to offer more than it can to produce valuable work. (On a more mundane and practical level, employers will turn to less expensive AI to produce work if human workers cannot provide value that justifies their compensation.) Hence, students must learn to write expressively and to make their own arguments. There is a legitimate place for AI in some writing processes, such as identifying sources for research, but not in the close reading of text and the construction of an argument. In short, you may not use generative AI in this course. If you would like to discuss generative AI further, please don’t hesitate to talk to me.
