NCS ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
English Department Generative A.I. Policy (Upper School)
Any portion of any assignment not created by you, including A.I.-generated content, is a violation of the NCS Honor Code. Your English teacher has designed the assignments for this class to help you learn to write clearly, to think critically and creatively about abstract ideas, to interpret literary works carefully within given contexts, and to conceive of and organize well-substantiated arguments. Using A.I. does not help you learn these critical skills and will stunt your intellectual growth, putting you at a serious disadvantage later in life both in school and in your professional career. Unless you are explicitly told that you can use AI for any and all work you do in English, assume that use of A.I. is not permitted. If you are ever unsure about what constitutes a violation of academic integrity, please talk to your teacher, but the best principle to follow is also the simplest: do your own work.

The NCS Honor Code
“Honesty, in school as in life, is of paramount importance. Lying, cheating, and stealing will not be tolerated.”
--The NCS Honor Code
Academic honesty is at the heart of the NCS Honor Code. In his book, Doing Honest Work in College, Charles Lipson identifies “three simple but powerful principles” of academic honesty:
“When you say you did the work yourself, you actually did it.
When you rely on someone else’s work, you cite it. When you use their words, you quote them openly and accurately, and you cite them, too.
When you present research materials, you present them fairly and truthfully. That’s true whether the research involves data, documents, or the writings of other scholars.”1
Every member of the NCS community – students, faculty, and staff – is bound to follow these basic principles as they go about their work. The information below is designed to help you understand how these principles work in specific situations in science.
General Guidelines
Uphold the honor code and include the honor code statement on all work that is used as a basis for evaluation.
Your teacher will indicate how an assignment is to be prepared; i.e., individually, with a partner, or as a group. If you have questions, ask the teacher until the expectations are clear.
Always use electronic devices in appropriate, relevant, and honest ways.
Tests and Quizzes
Until the assessment is graded and returned, you should not talk about the form, content, or degree of difficulty with other students.
Information about the content of tests or quizzes should not be shared with any student who might be taking the test or quiz at any other time.
Papers and/or Projects
You must cite the works you use in your research.
Laboratory Experiments and Activities
Never change or make up data.
Unless directed to ignore certain data by your teacher, use all of the collected data in your analysis.
Technology
The use of generative AI on any assignment requires teacher permission and it must be cited. Failure to disclose the use of generative AI will be considered a violation of our honor code.
Do not store or use inappropriate information in your electronic devices.
Do not share electronic files or other electronic information inappropriately.
Honest work is always expected. If your teacher’s guidelines are unclear, ask for clarification. Use this handout as a reference as you work.

NCS MATH DEPARTMENT
Use of Tech Tools and Generative AI:
In this age of advancing tools, including generative AI, the NCS Mathematics & Computer Science Department believes that our students need to understand and practice how to use these tools ethically and effectively to better prepare for their future. Unless permission is explicitly granted, the use of outside resources for graded work is a violation of the honor code. Generative AI tools are considered an outside resource. When considered an acceptable tool, failure to disclose the use of these tools is also considered a violation of the honor code.
If unsure, students should ask their teachers about the use of generative AI tools on a given assignment. In addition to the use of generative AI, we hope to also discuss with students the use of other resources (friends, guardians, tutors).
US French Expectations
Le Plagiat et la Tricherie
In addition to the basic tenets (do not copy someone else’s work, cite your sources rather than plagiarize, etc..), students should never use automatic translators of any kind under any circumstances. I expect and should see mistakes. Using AI, Google translate, and other similar programs is considered both plagiarism and cheating because the end work is not one’s own. Students should only use French that is “within their means.”
You may use these on-line dictionaries to look up individual words (NOT phrases or sentences):
Linguee.com is an excellent on-line dictionary, created by linguists.
Wordreference.com is another on-line dictionary with discussion forums, but it is crowd-sourced and can be more colloquial. It is also fine to use.
For students who would like to use a French-French dictionary, please consult Trésors de la langue française.
US Spanish
Note: In this class, students are not allowed to get help from any person or online program when producing work. Using an automatic translator, Chat GPT, or other similar programs is considered both plagiarism and cheating because the end work is not one’s own. As noted on our class rubric, students will be assessed on the Spanish that they have learned in class or is “within their means.” I expect and should see mistakes. However, you MAY USE the online dictionary, Wordreference.com, to look up individual words (NOT phrases or sentences). You must produce and organize your own content and construct your own phrases and sentences.
US Chinese
Students should never use automatic translators of any kind under any circumstances. I expect and should see mistakes. Using Google translate and other similar programs is considered both plagiarism and cheating because the end work is not one’s own. Students should only use Chinese that is “within their means.”

Artificial Intelligence: Any use of generative A.I. requires instructor permission. Failure to cite the use of generative A.I. (or any source) is considered a violation of the honor code.
